Hobart is a gateway city to the Southern Ocean and east Antarctica.  It is a major world centre for Antarctic and Southern Ocean scientific research: home to the Australian Antarctic Division and a number of other Antarctic and Southern Ocean research organisations, and the permanent Secretariats of the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) and the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).
